Starting on Thursday, May 7, the Gun Club will again be open for practice. Please be sure to practice social distancing and other safety practices to protect yourself and others. Other activities, including those that were postponed, will be rescheduled when appropriate. Be sure to visit the website and our Facebook page for updates. During the time that the Club has been closed several Board Members and volunteers have been busy taking care that critical elements of the Club were maintained and that the grounds and facility remained safe and secure. I don't have all of your names but "Thank You" for your work!! Some of the things that have been going on include realigning and improving drainage along the east side of the property in preparation for planting trees to act as a buffer for our neighbors. Construction debris left over from the warehouse project has mostly been removed. Our new sign has been delivered and will be installed soon. Installation of the fence between the west parking area and fields 1 and 2 is in process. Keeping the Club running and in good shape would not be possible without everybody who pitches in and lends a hand, doing whatever is necessary.
See you back at Old Skagit!

Effective immediately all activities at Old Skagit are postponed until further notice and at least until April 1. This includes regular practice days and times as well as all organized activities. The .410 Championship series will be held at a later date. The Annual Shareholders' Meeting will be rescheduled as well as the Meals on Wheels fundraiser. Please check back for updates and stay well.
How quickly we got through January. The days started running together with all the rain and wind! The club made it through just fine and the weather is improving so come on out for practice or any of the planned events.
The International League started and is well under way at this point. Last weekend was hosted by Old Skagit and saw a good turnout of local shooters. Team Old Skagit is doing very well this year--see the standings on the "International League" page. Next weekend at Bellingham is another opportunity to shoot in the League without crossing the border. Come out and support Old Skagit's team and also the Bellingham Club. Bellingham is an easy club to get to and a great club and good people to shoot with. The Winter Handicap Series is almost over. Next month is the last shoot in the series. After the second event there will be the "Champion of Champions" shoot off. This is always fun to watch and cheer for your favorite shooter. Come out and participate or shoot practice, stay for lunch, and watch the shoot off. Also time to dust off your .410 shotgun and get in some practice in preparation for the 2020 .410 Championship that starts in March. More information can be found on the "Fun Shoots" page. This is a weekly competition as well as a seven-week league. Weekly prizes as well as the buckle for high score over all. Very challenging but also fun. For the PITA shooters--programs for our shoots during 2020 are now posted. There will again be four "regular" shoots plus the two doubles marathons. Also remember the monthly Multiplex shoots. Be sure to check our calendar for the shoot dates. Happy New Year! Our Annual New Year’s Day Fun Shoot was awesome.
Great turn out of seasoned shooters and novice. Food was great too. The day wouldn’t have happened without all the volunteers, Thank You!! Results-- HOA (split) David Stevenson & Dennis Macy Singles- Herk Sorsdal Hdcp Slider- Jack Kennedy Chip- Don Meece Buddy Backer- Henry Park & Dustin Rindal Provided by Heather Jackson December is always a busy month for everybody and also for the club. The first week included the PITA Multiplex on Thursday night followed by the Winter Handicap shoot on Saturday. A week later on Saturday was the PITA Memorial Shoot. Now we can take a short rest and relax and enjoy the season.
The new year is just around the corner and January will be a busy month at the club. Things will start out with a Fun Shoot and General Club Meeting on Jan. 1. Everybody is welcome. (See the "Fun Shoots" page for full information and all shooting events are free!!) Also a potluck so bring your favorite dish. The next Multiplex series will be starting and runs from January through April. Check our calendar for specific dates. The Multiplex is a good opportunity for shooters new to PITA competition as the events are 50 birds instead of the usual 100--and you can shoot as few or as many events as you like. See our "Pita Events" page for more information. January 4 is the next Winter Handicap Series shoot. These are not PITA registered targets and the shoot is open to everybody. Two 50- bird handicap events with a break for lunch in between. You can shoot one or both events. Also starting in January is the International League, an opportunity to visit some clubs both in the U.S. and Canada. More information will be posted shortly on our website but the dates are already available in the "Calendar" section. If you are concerned about what is involved with crossing the border with your gun talk to Jack Kennedy or Chuck Manning. They can give you the information you need and ease some fears. Or if you prefer to just shoot in the U.S., you can participate at Old Skagit and Bellingham Clubs and still have the opportunity for some fun and to meet new people.
Toys For Tots - Turkey Shoot Fundraiser
Saturday, Nov. 9th with real wet looking overcast skies, Moose Old Skagit Gun Club hosted this annual event. We were blessed with a reprieve from the rain and the most successful shoot in our history. Ladies associated with Moose Lodge #1640 made a wonderful turkey dinner for us. They made great smells and fed 72 with plates of a traditional meal, thank you so much. Members of Masonic Lodge #77 spent the last 2 months traveling to lodges throughout our area pre-selling targets and adding to the coffers in excess of $800.00. Our thanks to the Masons who not only attended in record numbers but staffed our trap fields. Henry Park again organized our Pig Shoot which was also the biggest in history. The boys from Granite Falls and Bellingham Gun Clubs teamed up to beat out MOSGC shooters. A twelve year old boy shooting a pump gun as long as he was tall made the most spectacular shoot of the day when he backed up the best Granite Falls had to offer. Again we cannot thank local business enough for their support, they don't do this for recognition but they deserve it anyway. Quantum Construction, Welch Brothers Construction, SRV Construction, Mr & Mrs. Johnson & Pacific Tank & Body all helped make another charitable record. So many people contributed the most valuable and rare commodity in this day and age, their time. We all worked together collectively to provide a pick up load of toys and a check for $5000.00 which exceeds all previous events . We at MOSGC thank you for all your participation & contributions. Sincerely, C.S. Manning, President Moose Old Skagit Gun Club October was a busy month as always with the FFA shooters practicing and working to see who would represent their school in the Regional Competition. The team from Sedro-Woolley High School--Noelan Melton, Elijah Choat, Keegan Blaine, Bode Hanson, and Dyllan Osborne--took top honors from the ten high schools that competed. Ferndale and Stanwood teams tied for the runner-up position. Carter Talamantez from the Stanwood team was the top individual shooter. Schools from Whatcom, Skagit, and Snohomish Counties were represented at the Regional. Congratulations to all!!
Saturday's weather was good for shooting, particularly in the afternoon when the sun came out. Forty shooters participated in the Handicap events and enjoyed an excellent lunch of barbequed salmon, oysters, corn, coleslaw, and garlic bread. To top it off was cake decorated to celebrate Ken Austin's 50,000th registered target milestone. Thank you to everybody that helped to acquire and prepare the food!! As well as to those who did the cleanup after. Jim Cleave shot the highest total score for the day, breaking 186 out of 200 targets and received a trophy buckle as did the other event winners. Be sure to see the PITA web site for the full results. A link is on our "PITA Events" web page.
Sunday's weather took a turn for the worse, however, and the skies opened up with rain on the Buddy Backer Fun Shoot. Eight teams participated and Jim Cleave continued his good shooting as he combined with partner Gary Cooper to achieve the high score for the day. Both shooters received trophy buckles for their efforts. More information and pictures can be found on our Facebook page. Tomorrow is our PITA Registered Oyster Shoot. Two 100-bird handicap events and lots of good food for lunch. Also, Ken Austin will be shooting his 50,000th registered target. Come out and enjoy the day and celebrate his achievement.
And, Sunday is the Buddy Backer Competition. These are non-registered targets and the event is open to all shooters. More information is posted on our "Fun Shoots" web page. Attention Multiplex Shooters:
Please be aware that PITA has changed the Multiplex slightly and that it is now shot monthly. There are three sessions--September through December, January through April, and May through August. Old Skagit will no longer shoot Multiplex on the same schedule as the Winter Handicap Series but plans on shooting Multiplex on Thursday evening starting at 5 p.m. Please watch our calendar for the exact dates. Also, PITA has a full listing of the schedule for all clubs shooting Multiplex on their calendar. More information is posted on our "Pita Events" web page and also on PITA's website. Sorry that more of you couldn't attend the general informational meeting and fun shoot. Those of us who did had a good time shooting and sharing ideas and the weather was perfect. Congratulations to winners Gary Cooper and Jack Kennedy.
This next Saturday is our Memorial Fun Shoot to honor Old Skagit shooters and remember the good times that we all had together. (See our "Fun Shoot" web page for full information.) There is also one of our Informational Meetings about club doings at 9 a.m. This is a good opportunity to see and hear what has been happening around your club and also to have a fun day of shooting some clay targets.
Well we made it through the Fourth and I heard that everybody had a good time that attended the celebration fun shoot and Multiplex. Summer is moving along quickly and the state PITA shoot finished up last weekend. Congratulations to all those shooters from Old Skagit that attended and participated. Results and pictures are posted on the state PITA website and should also be available on the PITA website shortly. Links to both pages are on our "PITA Results" page. Next on the schedule is the PITA Grand at Spokane, starting next weekend. I know a few Old Skagit shooters will be there and the best of luck to them. For those who will not be at the Grand and would like to shoot some doubles, Old Skagit will be having a PITA Doubles Marathon and Doubles League on Saturday the twentieth. The program and more information is posted on "Upcoming PITA Events". Be safe and enjoy the summer! Summer is here! Or at least that is what the calendar says. Weather has been all over the spectrum but has not interfered with activities. The Singles League has concluded with Debbie Kelly taking top honors as Champion. (Full results are posted on the "Fun Shoot" page.) Last weekend was the PITA Registered Shoot with two days of tough competition. The Trophy Report has been posted on the PITA website but congratulations belong to the following shooters: Stephen Cherry HOA, Mark Rensi A Class, Les Butler B Class, Jack Kennedy C Class, and Janet Shields D Class. Debbie Kelly had the high single event score for the weekend with her 99 in Event 1 Singles.
Still time for PITA shooters to get in some practice before the Washington State PITA Shoot coming up July 10 through 14 at Evergreen and the PITA Grand Pacific July 21 through 27 at Spokane. Even if you don't compete, these are fun events to attend and cheer on our club shooters who will be participating. The next event scheduled will be the Fourth of July Fun Shoot, which includes the July Multiplex. More information can be found on the "Fun Shoot" page but this will be a fun and casual way to spend the afternoon celebrating our nation. Lots happening at the club this month. The .410 League has finished up and a new Spring Singles League has started. You can shoot as often as you want from the 16-yard line for the league and your five highest scores will be your total score. (See "Fun Shoots" for full information.)
Also this month on Monday, Memorial Day, is the Ugly Doubles and Singles Fun Shoot. You can shoot doubles or singles or both and also bring a dish to share during the potluck lunch. You will be shooting "pick up" targets so you never know if you will get a whole target or how they will fly. ("Pick ups" are clay targets that have already been thrown, were unbroken, and have been picked up out of the field to be used again.) (Also see "Fun Shoots" for full information.) A preview for June-- Once again Dorie Jones will be teaching a class on trap shooting on June 22. This class can be for new shooters or those of us who would like to improve our skill. Spaces are still available in the morning session. Contact Sherry at oldskagit@yahoo.com to sign up. Also in June is our PITA Shoot on June 15 and 16. The club will be closed for practice on Saturday the 15th. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate for our fundraiser and kept many shooters away. However, a big "Thank You" goes to our gracious shooters who participated and also to major donors--Quantum Construction, Welch Brothers, Louws Truss, and Pacific Tank and Body. To donate any time of the year please send contributions to:
Skagit Council on Aging PO Box 693 Mt Vernon, WA 98273 April has arrived and the Annual Shareholders Meeting as held last Saturday. This meeting was open to shareholders only but much of the information discussed at that meeting will be found on our "About" page under the SPC Report for 2018. Also at this meeting Jack Kennedy and Chuck Manning were re-elected to serve as Board Members for the next two years. Other Board Members are Heather Jackson, Don McMoran, and Marsee Wilson, all who still have a year left on their term of office.
With improving weather March was full of activities for the gun club.--
The last Winter Handicap Shoot was held along with the Champion of Champions competition. See the "Results" page for the complete results. The PITA Registered Shoot was held and drew shooters from across the state and also Canada. Be sure to see the "PITA Results" page for a list of winners and pictures. The International League also finished up with the annual banquet held at Ridgedale Gun Club, Canada. Old Skagit shooters did very well, particularly considering some of the weather issues. Again, see the "International League Results" page for a complete list of their accomplishments. This is a really fun league to participate in and also an opportunity to meet many different shooters and visit different clubs. During the month the .410 Gauge Championship Shoot also started and is continuing into April. If you own a .410 and want a new and 'interesting' challenge you might consider trying this. Due to inclement weather Old Skagit was closed on February 9 and 12. The club will be open on Thursday February 14. (Board meeting postponed until February 21.)
The International League Shoot is still planned for this coming weekend February 16 & 17. There will be no practice traps available on Saturday but the monthly fun shoot is still scheduled for Sunday. Thank you to everybody for making this another successful year for our fund raising for Toys for Tots. Many toys were collected to go along with $4200 in cash for this worthy cause.
